Civic Day June 17th (2017)

Civic Day is a national celebration of civic pride. It is a day when communities across the country say "we care about where we live".

In 2009 the Yorkshire Association of Civic Societies launched Civic Society Week, an annual event that encouraged civic societies to celebrate where they live. In 2011, fully supportive of this initiative, Civic Voice organised the first ever national Civic Day. Last year it was held on June 18th 2016 and it  turned out to be a great success. You can see all the stories and pictures from Civic Day 2016 below. Civic Day is a unique opportunity to stimulate new interest and generate a renewed sense of civic pride for communities across the country. See below some of the events which civic societies and community groups across the country have organised for this year's Civic Day.  It has been announced that Civic Day 2017 will be held on Saturday 17th June. The Finchley Society has been erecting plaques at local features for a couple of years so that residents and visitors can better understand the heritage of the area. On Saturday 18th June, Civic Day, Councillor David Longstaff, the Mayor of Barnet, will be unveiling the latest plaque in Friary park beside the statue.

The plaque gives details of Joseph Durham, the well-known Victorian sculptor, of the part played by Sydney Simmons, whose generous donation led to the creation of the park and explains the tragic event on 7 th May 1910 that was the inspiration for the statue.
