PLYMOUTH people can play a part in protecting local war memorials as part of a project to commemorate the First World War

The project, co-ordinated by the War Memorials Trust, Imperial War Museums, Civic Voice and English Heritage as part of the national commemorative events, will help conserve the nation's war memorials for the long term.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “As we reflect on the events that saw so many people make the ultimate sacrifice, I believe it is vital that we ensure our memorials are fitting tributes to the fallen.

“Local communities can access the funds they need to repair, protect and conserve war memorials across the country, so that they can remain places of respect for future generations and help people to better understand what happened a century ago.”

Civic Voice and Plymouth Civic Society will be holding a free workshop to provide volunteers with the skills to record conditions, apply for grants, and get their local war memorials listed.

A workshop is taking place on July 8 at The Business Space, 67-71 Mayflower Street from 10am until 2.30pm.The workshops are free and include a light lunch.

Places can be booked online at http://www.civicvoice.org.uk/warmemorials or by contacting War Memorials, Civic Voice on 0151 707 4319.
