Shrewsbury Civic Society - National Civic Day

Shrewsbury Civic Society volunteers had a busy day on Saturday when townsfolk descended on their headquarters at the Bear Steps to take part in National Civic Day.

Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski called in for a chat and SCS planning committee chairman, Mike Carter informed him about the society’s recent achievements and forthcoming projects.

Mr Kawczynski said: “My thanks to organisers for a very successful event on Saturday and all the Civic Society do to promote Shrewsbury’s unique and special culture, architecture and history.”

The Mayor of Shrewsbury Miles Kenny and Mayoress Aurona Kenny also spent time at the Bear Steps. Remarking on The Civic Society’s role in the preservation of Shrewsbury he said: "We have a remarkable town, full of different forms of architecture, some very ancient and others more modern. I very much welcome the role of the Civic Society in publicising, protecting and enhancing that diversity.”

Art Gallery committee chairman John Brown conducted four historic tours of the town centre during the day and many visitors had a look around the upper section of the Bear Steps Gallery to see a model of the Bear Steps and the first viewing of a painting of Fish Street by artist Steve Walsh.

Organiser Bibbs Cameron Tomaszewski said: “Thank you to all those who contributed to this very successful day. We not only had visitors from Shrewsbury but from far afield including Italy and the USA who were excited to hear the history of the building and the role the Civic Society has played in the preservation of the buildings in this historic town.
