And the timing could be just right, as residents have been working to form a new community group which should have greater clout when it comes to leading the way in transforming Wigton into a more attractive place to live and work.
Members of the Pride in Wigton group have already been pressing for improvements and hope to use Tesco’s decision not to build in the town as a springboard to increase optimism.
Some small businesses feared that a new Tesco superstore on the former Hopes Auction site would lead to their closure, though others believed its draw to bring in new customers would be a bonus.
