YHACS set to relaunch the Horbury Civic Society

On Thursday evening, 1st October, a public meeting was held in Horbury to set about re-launching the Society

Earlier this year, the committee of Horbury Civic Society decided that they had reached the end of the road. With only four members remaining on the committee and none of them getting any younger, they were set to close the Society down. However, when the committee of YHACS heard the news, they decided to offer their help to the Horbury committee. The outcome of this was that the existing committee retired and the YHACS committee were elected as the new committee of the Society with Kevin Trickett, chair of YHACS (and president of Wakefield Civic Society), being elected as chairman of the Society.

Kevin Trickett said “We really don’t want to see civic societies closing down so when we heard what the Horbury committee were proposing, we felt we had to help. By stepping in to take over the running of the Society, we’ve allowed a breathing space that will give us time to reach out to the people of Horbury and to give others a chance to take over from us in due course. Last night’s meeting was just the beginning of that process. Horbury is a relatively small town but there are lots of community groups and we need to engage with these other groups to see how we can work together but we also need to recruit new members. We’ve already started a Twitter campaign and there’s a new website on its way as we need to tell the people of Horbury that the Society is still here and could have a great future ahead of it. Our next task is to set up a steering group of local people who can work with the new committee to shape the future programme of activity for the Society. All being well, we can then hand the running of the Society back to an elected committee made up of local people early in 2016”.
