Civic Voice issues key briefing on NPPF consultation as MPs get ready to return to Parliament

As MPs return from the Parliamentary recess, Civic Voice has released a crucial briefing for civic societies to use in upcoming meetings with their representatives. This briefing comes at a pivotal moment as the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) consultation reaches its halfway point.

The briefing, based on a recent poll, highlights concerns about the current planning reforms and their ability to address the housing crisis. A significant 72% of respondents are sceptical that the government's target of 1.5 million homes by 2029 will be met under the existing framework.

Key issues raised include the lack of resources in planning departments, a critical skills shortage in the construction industry, and the overreliance on market-driven solutions that often fail to provide affordable housing. The briefing also calls for more regionalised planning to address the diverse needs across the country.

Timed to coincide with MPs' return to Parliament, this briefing urges civic societies to share their concerns with local MPs and Councillors to ensure their voices are heard at this critical juncture. Civic Voice is also planning further engagement and discussions with key policymakers including a formal response to the NPPF consultation.
