PRESS RELEASE: Ian Harvey SFIPM FRSA joins Historic England’s Historic Places Panel

Ian Harvey, joint-founder of Civic Voice and a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Place Management, has been appointed to Historic England's prestigious Historic Places Panel, bringing to the panel's diverse expertise his extensive experience in the high street and stakeholder engagement.

The Historic Places Panel, which is facilitated by Historic England, offers a wide range of independent expertise and advice to assist local governments and others in the regeneration and revitalisation of historic places. Panellists are passionate about placemaking, the historic environment, and the character of a place. Panellists seek to explore and advise on potential new or unidentified opportunities for Place Making through constructive conversations and engagement with stakeholders. Panellists freely offer expert advice and opinions, culminating in a set of recommendations in a published paper.

In addition to his freelance consultancy work, Ian Harvey is a joint-founder of the national charity Civic Voice, a member of the Executive Group of the High Street Task Force, and the Secretary of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Civic Societies. He is also an Honorary Senior Fellow of the Institute of Place Management, where he was elected for his personal leadership, vision, and commitment to the civic cause, as well as for giving voice and support to thousands of placemakers across the UK. In January 2023, Ian was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and is a judge for the International Diana Award and VISA's Lets Celebrate Towns Award.

As a respected figure in the place leadership sector, Ian's appointment to Historic England's Historic Places Panel will expand the panel's expertise in the high street and stakeholder engagement. His deep commitment to fostering a collaborative culture and leveraging civic pride through a place-based approach will greatly contribute to the panel's discussions and decision-making.

"I have long been saying that we need unique approaches to offering local places additional guidance and support, as such I am honoured to join Historic England's Historic Places Panel and to contribute to the conservation and promotion of England's historic places," Ian Harvey said. "I am particularly excited to bring my experience from Civic Voice and the IPM to the panel as we work to create a culture of collaboration, creating vibrant and sustainable historic places for future generations."

"We are pleased to have Ian, and a number of other new panellists join our Historic Places Panel", said Ben Derbyshire, Chair of the Historic Places Panel and former President of the RIBA. "His wealth of community engagement experience and commitment will undoubtedly enrich our discussions and contribute to the conservation and promotion of England's historic places."

Ian Harvey's appointment to Historic England's Historic Places Panel will begin at the AGM on May 3rd. It will last for three years, reinforcing the panel's commitment to having a broad set of skills helping to support local authorities across England.
