Ripon Civic Society criticises cathedral plans to build on green space
Ripon Civic Society objects to the proposed location of a new building north of Ripon Cathedral to provide additional accommodation.
The Society supports the Cathedral's goal of constructing a Song School, Refectory, shop, toilets, and storage space, but objects to the proposed building site in Minster Gardens, a public open space surrounded by historic listed buildings. The two-story structure will take up half of the open space and will necessitate the removal of at least ten trees. Local policies protect the site, which is owned by Harrogate Borough Council and will soon be transferred to North Yorkshire Council, as open space.
Ripon Civic Society requests more consultation and suggests that the Cathedral build on the former Stoneyard next to Minster Gardens, which is already in their possession.
