Millerground Enhancement Group

Overgrown vegetation

Work continues on the Civic Society project to help restore a Windermere lakeside area known as Millerground. This area is owned by South Lakeland District Council, Windermere Town Council and the National Trust. We are working with these organisations plus others including our Community Police Support Officer, local schools, Lake District National Park Authority, Better, and Age Concern to help restore the area to its former splendour.

Millerground on the eastern shore of Lake Windermere is one of the oldest public access points around the Lake. It offers a peaceful natural environment providing pleasant and enjoyable recreation for everyone.

Many years ago Millerground was an open area enjoyed by residents and visitors offering stunning views of the lake. It provided recreational facilities for boating, bathing, lakeshore walks, picnicking or generally just enjoying the scenery. Over the years, despite best efforts, it has become run down. Shrubs and trees have become overgrown, pathways and steps have eroded, and generally easy access has deteriorated. In an attempt to restore Millerground to its former splendour, the Windermere and Bowness Civic Society has started a community project.

Our aim is to bring the maintenance up to date and refurbish this natural area of lakeshore. Under the guidance of the National Trust, with students from local schools, we have already achieved practical improvements. We hope the students will also gain a sense of ownership and responsibility for the area. So far we have re-surfaced paths, cleared excess undergrowth and planted 2200 native bluebells. In achieving this we are very grateful for sponsorship from Burlington Slate, Homebase plc, Messrs Hackney & Leigh, Cllr Allan Winrow (WTC), Cllr Ben Berry (SLDC), and Abi & Tom of Halecat Nursery. Additional work-party dates will be circulated to members by email.

We are also researching the history of Millerground and would be very interested to receive your written memories of the area, and to see any relevant photographs from family albums. If you have any then please let us know. We'd be delighted to see them!
